Volunteer of the Month Program has Terrific First Year!

Karin Fullam was honored as the January 2012 Volunteer of the Month. Her nomination cited her work with PMI, high school youth, Elias Church, the Historic Summer Day Camp and her many other commitments to the community. Congratulations, Karin, and thank you for all you do!Beginning in 2011, MHRA initiated a Volunteer of the Month program. Throughout the year, we have accepted nominations from community groups, nonprofits, schools, individuals and every other organization you can think of who wished to have one of their volunteers recognized for their commitment and their contributions. Our 2011 Volunteers of the Month include Dennis & Mary Keiser, Paula Christy & Joannah Skucek, Donald Ulrich, Kylie Kuhns, Jim and Kathy Ranny, Sue Sampsell, George Gutelius and George Steese, Ryan Sampsell, Bob Lynch, Mike Lynch, Judy Muchler and Peggy Reimensnyder. I think everyone would agree that all of these people have contributed significantly to the community through their volunteerism and we congratulate and honor each and every one of them.In February, all of these monthly winners will be invited to a Volunteer Appreciation Reception. Additionally, every person who volunteered in some way for MHRA will be invited. We want to recognize and thank the people who have given their time and talents to MHRA because we are very appreciative of all they do for our organization and for the community as a whole. Also at that reception, the 2011 Volunteer of the Year winner will be announced.Communities with a good volunteer base thrive because of the commitment of these people to their community and their own belief in their community. Nominate a volunteer! Let's shine a light on these often unsung heroes who give back to their community. Any person, organization, school, fraternal order, nonprofit, etc., can nominate volunteers for recognition. We especially would like to focus on more youth volunteers who give of themselves to the community. Go to www.mifflinburgpa.com for a volunteer nomination form or email mhra@dejazzd.com or call 966-1666 to request a form.Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers! You are all essential pieces that help make the whole of Mifflinburg!

From Main Street...To Elm Street

2012 is shaping up to be a very busy year. As you saw from the front page, MHRA is hosting its first annual Volunteer Recognition Reception on February 22. Following that in late March or early April (date to be determined) we will be hosting a Business Expo with area businesses hosting tables to show off their products and services with hopefully a couple of interesting demonstrations for you to all enjoy. In May, Main Street and Elm Street are working together to host a MayFest. For the downtown, this will be Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19 and will include (tentatively) entertainment, vendors, store promotions, temporary businesses. I am also coordinating a Plein Air event for those days which will hopefully bring artists painting and working outside on the streets of Mifflinburg. For Elm Street, the focus will be on May 19 with a Maypole event, entertainment, vendors and artisans that coincides with Buggy Day. There will be something for everyone to do that weekend! We held our first Morning Business Meeting this morning and had a discussion about the requirements from the Payment Card Industry Data Security Systems Council that apply to any business that accepts credit card payments. For those who could not attend and would like the information, please email me at mhra@dejazzd.com and I will forward the materials to you. Other topics coming up in the following months include identity theft, firewall software for your computer systems, more on internet security. If anyone has a particular topic you would like to have a speaker present to you, please let me know.Planning a special store event or ribbon cutting or need help with marketing or promotions or anything else? Give me a call! Glad to help where and when I can!...To Elm StreetElm Street moving forward even during these cold monthsThe Design Committee - The Facade program continues its development and funding through DCED looks promising. However, it is required that we submit a list of interested property owners with our application. Property owners should call 966-0888. In addition, the committee is surveying historical houses and hopes to develop a design for a plaque to designate these residences and buildings. The committee is also looking to design a banner that would be representative of the historic district. The Clean, Safe and Green Committee - The Cutting Garden design has been approved. Mike McEvoy submitted several designs. Next step materials list. The Neighbors and Economy Committee - Partnering with the Main Street small business committee; planning their aspect of MayFest in the business district. The Image and Identity Committee - The committees energy is focused on planning MayFest which will include Buggy Day, entertainment, Maypoles, food, and artisan demonstrations throughout the Elm Street neighborhood . Letters will be sent to organizations in February that might be interested in participating. An application for a Pennsylvania Historic Marker has been submitted to the PA Historic Museum Commission. Funding for the marker has reached over $900 to date. Our goal is $2,000. Anyone interested in donating to this fund please call Murrie at 966-088 Other Doings:-	The Streetscape project on 5th between Market and Quarry Road is completed. Street lights are still to come.
Tales From the Market

First of all, a HUGE THANK YOU to the Christkindl Market co-chairs, Cara Brouse, Paula Christy and Joannah Skucek, and to all of the dozens and dozens of volunteers that helped make the Market happen. Attendance, by all accounts, appears to have been record breaking this year (along with three good weather days which doesn't historically occur that often). The Market was thoroughly enjoyed by all and there were many, many first time attendees this year from New York, Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and from all parts of Pennsylvania. We also had a number of high schools attending on Friday and several historical society bus trips to the Market from PA and Maryland. We had tremendous positive feedback from attendees and some great stories, too. I was speaking with a group of women who were from Alexandria, PA, and I asked them how they heard about the Market. It turns out that they had come here some weeks ago to ride the Rail Trail and found out about Christkindl and decided to come. They loved it, plan to attend again next year and said they would be bringing friends. We actually spoke to a number of people who had heard about the Market because they had come to Mifflinburg to ride the Rail Trail. That definitely shows there's some great opportunities for our business district area, too, going forward!Another woman emailed me that she'd had a wonderful experience at the Market and an especially lovely experience with a vendor. She saw a sign at floor level that said "Grace" and asked if it was for sale. The vendor asked if her name was Grace. She replied that it was not but it was her mother's name and that her mother is 101 years old. The vendor smiled and said, "Then give it to her from me".A number of people commented that they had been to other Christkindl Markets (including a few people from a PA city with a large Market) and they all said that Mifflinburg's is far superior to any other Market they had attended. Now that's a big compliment! The Market has grown over the years and now attracts thousands of people and is definitely a regional and, even, a multistate attraction. But it is still a community event in the sense that it takes the entire community to mount an event of this size. So to all of the community - volunteers, donors, residents of the area who have to "put up" with it for a week, the borough and its employees, craft vendors, food vendors and everyone else - THANK YOU!

We will resume our morning business meetings on Wednesday, January 11 at 8:30 am at 300 Chestnut Street.
Residents are reminded to remove all vehicles from parking areas adjacent to public streets in instances when snowstorms are imminent. It will greatly help Borough employees in their plowing efforts. If you have available space on your property for off-street parking, please use it when it snows. We are also offering another reminder to mark the edge of your lawns with brightly colored stakes or flags to aide in locating where the edge of pavement ends during snow plowing and remove all ornamental decorations, basketball structures, etc. that may end-up in the path of the snowplows. These simple yet conscientious efforts will greatly assist the Borough crew in clearing the snow and minimizing personal property damage.

From Main Street ... To Elm Street

I got an email this morning from a friend of mine that made a lot of sense to me (thanks Sharon!). Everyone knows what a sorry state the economy is in these days and how many people are unemployed or underemployed and how much businesses are struggling. Instead of sending our dollars out of state or overseas, let's think outside the box about what we put on our shopping lists for Christmas and keep the tax revenue and money right here in our own area.Gifts come in many sizes and many styles but does that mean that have to come in a huge box with paper and ribbons? How about a gift certificate to the local salon for a hair appointment or a manicure or pedicure or to the barber for one of the guys. What about an oil change at the local garage for one of the guys. A gift certificate to one of our local restaurants is another good one. Everyone needs their car washed occasionally and most would probably love a gift certificate for a detailing. Mom would probably love to have the house cleaned from top to bottom after the holidays or maybe have the windows washed. You could give someone a gift certificate from yourself to do some babysitting. How about a gift certificate to a local lawn care business to have the yard cleaned in the spring or a month of mowing or even for plowing out the drive during the winter. Know someone with pets? Try a gift certificate to their vet. Everyone loves a steak now and then so how about a gift certificate to the butcher shop. Local stores also carry many locally made products and there are many talented people in the area that make things from jewelry to scarves to clothing to decorative items to candles and more. The bottom line is this. These gifts of caring give the receiver a special gift - that of time and relaxation. They also help support our locally owned and operated businesses. This year, let your PRESENTS be known by shopping locally and keeping the tax money here and the dollars local. Those locally spent dollars support the small businesses, their owners and families, help provide quality of life and allows them to spend their money locally. May all of you have a wonderful holiday season!Elm Street moving forward ...The Design Committee - The Facade program continues its development and funding through DCED looks promising. However, it is required that we submit a list of interested property owners with our application. Times to be determined. The Coffee House Quilters will be displaying their handmade quilts. The Black Tie Choral Ensemble will be performing Saturday afternoon at 4pm. The Elias Church Historical Marker Fund is now at $565 towards our goal of $2,000. Thanks to all the donors.

The sky was grey, the air moist, the ground squeaked and the mud squished, but Mifflinburg’s Oktoberfest, held Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, was a sunny spot in otherwise dreary conditions. While the weather kept attendance down 30% from last year’s record breaking crowd, attendance was still good and the good times rolled. Dancers danced and musicians played while food vendors continued to provide German foods and American festival favorites and German beer and German style wines were served well into the late evening. Over 2,000 people braved the weather. The event kicked off at 1pm on Friday with the traditional tapping of the first keg by Mayor David Cooney that marks the official opening of the festival. The ever popular games had fierce competition this year. Fourteen men and six women competed in the two divisions of the Keg Toss. John Meternan won the men’s division first place with a toss of 24 feet 11 inches while Ron Laniewski placed second with a toss of 24 feet 6 inches. For the ladies, Ula Komczewska won first place with a toss of 18 feet and in second place was Charity Bowersox with a toss of 27 feet 4 inches. In the Munich Mug Lift competition, it was a family sweep in both divisions with 13 men and 11 women competing. Rick Wible won first place in the men’s division with a time of 4 minutes and 10 seconds and his wife, Leigh Wible, won the women’s division with a time of 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Placing second in the men’s division was Ron Laniewski with a time of 3 minutes 40 seconds and second place for the women was Melinda Erdley with a time of 2 minutes and 5 seconds. Mifflinburg Heritage & Revitalization Association, Inc sponsor of the event, thanks all of the volunteers and especially the committee members and co-chairs of the event, Juergen Seefeldt and Larry Mitchell, for their time and talents in making the festival such a success.

We have once again come upon the “busy” time of year for everyone (and it’s really amazing how quickly we seem to have arrived at that time of year again). Because everyone has very packed scheduled, there will be no morning business coffees held in November and December. We will resume our monthly morning coffees again in January. And speaking of busy, Christkindl will soon be here. This is an enormous event that takes many, many dozens of volunteers to help with literally hundreds of details that are required to get the Market up and running. Christkindl needs additional volunteers throughout the Market. Please understand that being a “volunteer” does not require weeks or even days – if you can spend even two or three hours during the event or have some time during the days preceding the Market to help with set up, it would be greatly appreciated. Every bit helps. This is the largest visitor drawing event in the entire Greater Susquehanna Valley area and something the community should be very proud of. Please call or email if you can help in any way.A special request has come from the Christkindl shuttle committee. They are looking for volunteers to assist visitors with parking as well as shuttle bus boarding. If you can give a bit of time to that, please contact Madeline Prak at 966-3674.Elm Street moving forward…The Design Committee — The process of establishing guidelines for a Façade Program funded through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) is in progress. After all policies and procedures have been approved funds will be sought in the spring of 2012. We are trying to determine residents’ interest. DCED now requires a list of property owners wishing to participate as part of the application process. Property owners should call 966-0888. In addition, the committee is interested in researching appropriate signage to designate historical buildings within the Elm Street neighborhood. The Clean, Safe and Green Committee —The cutting garden will be placed at the Wierick House in the space between the house and garage. Committee members are researching garden plans circa the 1830’s for authenticity. The Neighbors and Economy Committee0 — Partnering with the Main Street small business committee are expanding plans for Buggy Day in May. The Image and Identity Committee — MHRA, PMI and the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum continue to collaborate. The Elias Church will be open and decorated for the Ghost Walk on October 23. The committee is looking at the possibility of an Elm Street logo and tag line and possible Maypole festival. The Elias Church is in need of a Historical Marker estimated cost $2,000. We are beginning a fund to raise this amount. Other Doings:-	The Streetscape project on 5th between Market and Quarry Road is moving forward.-	Plans for the Elias Center for the Performing Arts are taking shape. The funding for the auxiliary building has been received and the construction process has begun.-	A Theatre Workshop for high school students is under consideration for the summer of 2012.-	The Elias Church is in need of a state Historical Marker, estimated cost $2,000.

While many of you won’t remember the days of home milk delivery, there are some of us who do. We had insulated containers outside the door and the milkman brought milk, cheese, cream, cottage cheese and a variety of other dairy products and left it in the container for you. When you finished with your milk, you washed the bottles and put them in the container for the milkman to pick up. Chris Hudler, owner of Happy Cow Naturals, is bringing the milkman delivery services back---and much more than just milk.Hudler’s farm produces raw milk for which he has a raw milk permit and the processing plant is inspected every two weeks. Raw milk will keep fresh in your refrigerated for at least 17 days. He is beginning regular delivery routes to Lewisburg, Mifflinburg and State College. It also continues to emphasize the importance of consuming fresh and local products.” Happy Cow Naturals is located on Buffalo Creek Road, Mifflinburg.
FROM MAIN STREET TO ELM STREET...

It’s hard to believe, but a year has passed since Murrie and I began working here in Mifflinburg. It’s been a busy year for us as we try and work on the organization and learn more about the area and meet people. Mifflinburg has an amazing amount of things to offer and we continue to be excited about all of the possibilities even in this time of the familiar phrase of “There’s no money!” We thought this month we would give you a brief recap of what we have done, have started, have planned and areworking toward. As you know, the streetscape project has begun and while we haven’t yet (as of this writing) seen much in the way of new concrete, the trees are down and work will begin as soon as everyone’s caught up from the recent heavy rains.MHRA owns three historic properties in town: the Elias Church, the Log House and the Wierick House. Work continues, albeit not as rapidly as we’d like, on continued rehabilitation of those properties. The outbuilding construction for the Elias Church will begin this winter and will house the restrooms and the HVAC system. We are anticipating the completion of that work and the opening of the building for rentals and as a venue for performing arts in the fall of 2012. As I am sure you have heard, we are also working on finding funds to acquire and rehabilitate the old borough building on Chestnut Street. We completed a feasibility plan this spring and have worked with an architect to get cost estimates and are continuing to move forward. The plan, at present, is for the building to be a small business incubator, artisan cooperative and farmer’s market on the first floor with second and third stories having market rate apartments. We began a volunteer recognition program this year. Volunteers are so vital to a community and yet largely go unsung. We felt it was time to honor them for their commitment to a variety of community groups and organizations. We plan to honor all Volunteer of the Month nominees plus all MHRA volunteers at an event in the early part of 2012. We also began a volunteer hour tracking program so we can use those volunteer hours to not only report to the state as an organization but to use as matches for grant and funding applications.Since spring we have been holding monthly business coffees with speakers on a variety of subjects from ADA compliance to social networking to QR codes to smart phones. We have also met and set a schedule of mini downtown events to increase downtown foot traffic. Currently, we are planning on a holiday kick off shopping afternoon/evening prior to the tree lighting in November, a business expo in March, a Build a Better Block/Maypole/Plein Air event in May and a sidewalk sale in July along with a “Support your independents” promotion. New membership benefit packages were created and sent out along with business surveys so we can understand the specific issues that concern our businesses. MHRA has also done a number of ribbon cuttings and provided one on one assistance to businesses upon request and are actively involved with them.On an organizational basis, we have spent a good deal of time working on updating our strategic plan, reviewing and revising policies, procedures and by-laws. We are also evaluating our print materials and exploring avenues for raising additional funds for our projects. We collaborated this year with the Buggy Museum and PMI and held our first Summer History Day Camp, which was a great success. We look forward to more collaborative events in the next year. This has just been a brief highlight of our first year and it’s been a start but only a start. We both look forward to this next year and all it brings!

Once again, it’s time to pull up your lederhosen and tighten your dirndls, grab your partner for the ever popular chicken dance and starting pumping iron for tossing kegs and lifting steins. It’s OKTOBERFEST 2011! On September 30 and October 1, the VFW Carnival Grounds just west of Mifflinburg on Route 45 will be “heady” with music, dancing, food and German beer and German style wine. The event is sponsored by Mifflinburg Heritage & Revitalization Association, Inc. This year, the fest will open on Friday at 1 pm with Mayor Dave Cooney performing the traditional cry of "O' zapft is!" (It’s tapped!) that officially marks the beginning of the festival. From then on the food and fun continues for two days. There will be food vendors with everything from wursts to schnitzels to spaetzle to kartoffelpuffer plus roast chicken, pretzels, burgers and other festival favorites. The music will also flow with Walt Groller and his Nationally Known Band on Saturday night plus other bands and dancers throughout the days and evenings. The Puppen Meister Country Kids Jamboree will be there with fun and games for children plus hay rides and carriage rides. Traditional German beers expected to be served include Paulaner and Spaten Oktoberfests from Munich Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse (Wheat) from Munich Spaten Lager & Spaten Dark from Munich Beck's Oktoberfest from Bremen Köstritzer Schwarzbier Hacker-Pshorr Oktoberfest from Munich. Free birch beer will be served to all designated drivers who will have special wristbands.
From Main Street...To Elm Street

From Main Street...We are still in need of your surveys and your memberships! Please send them in so we can compile the survey results and complete our annual budget! The September morning business coffee will be Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8:30 am at 300 Chestnut Street. We have spent the past two meetings discussing and practicing with and studying the various uses of QR Codes in marketing and promotional materials. That being said, there seems to be a fair amount of confusion regarding smart phones and what they can do, can’t do, different platforms, apps, etc. We have extended an invitation to an area smart phone dealer to come and demonstrate smart phone use and discuss the similarities, differences and applications. Next month’s column should have a schedule of dates for small downtown street events. This schedule will be based on the outcomes of a meeting held August 23 with local businesses to determine how many and how often they would like to have downtown events. Get your calendars ready!.....TO ELM STREETElm Street moving forward…The Design Committee is exploring the possibility of applying for a Façade Grant through the Department of Community and Economic Development. These funds would then be in the form of a matching grant or loan to qualified residential property owners within the Elm Street neighborhood; allowing them to fix up the fronts of their houses. We are trying to determine residents’ interest and reviewing guidelines from existing programs. The Clean, Safe and Green Committee is planning a cutting garden within the Elm Street neighborhood. Two potential sites are being considered. This would be both a flower and herb garden. The Neighbors and Economy Committee definitely needs interested residents to participate. The current focus is in support of MHRA’s bid to buy the old Borough building. This important historical property is seen as the “Gateway” between Main Street and Elm Street. The Image and Identity Committee has successfully supported the Historic Day Camp and looks forward to its return next year. MHRA, PMI and the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum are exploring additional avenues of collaboration to strengthen the historic district and promote its unique historic sites.By now the Streetscape project on 5th between Market and Quarry Road should be in full swing.Save the dates: Elm Street CommitteesSeptember 13 at 8 am DesignSeptember 20 at 8 am Safe, Clean & GreenTBA Neighbors & EconomyTBA Image & Identity

This month they are Snyder Union Mifflin Child Development and the Herr Memorial Library.Snyder Union Mifflin Child Development (SUMCD), Inc., is a private, non-profit organization that provides high-quality early childhood education to children and parents since 1969. SUMCD’s mission statement is “Building the future through early care and education… one family at a time.” SUMCD believes in the very important role parents play in the development and growth of children and therefore serves families, not just children.
